General Description

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms arching, or leaning; slender; 152-260 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement two, or three; with subequal branches. Culm-sheaths deciduous. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate. INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes, or comprising only a few spikelets. Racemes single; bearing few fertile spikelets; bearing 2-4 fertile spikelets on each. FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets oblanceolate; laterally compressed; 12.45-18 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes elongated below proximal fertile floret. GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 5 -veined. Lower glume apex setaceously attenuate. Upper glume lanceolate; 5 -veined. Upper glume apex setaceously attenuate. FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; chartaceous; without keel; 9 -veined. Lemma apex setaceously attenuate. Palea chartaceous; 4 -veined. Palea apex dentate. Apical sterile florets 1 in number; barren; linear. FLOWER Ovary glabrous. DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
