General Description

HABIT Annual (6), or perennial (6). Culms erect (1), or geniculately ascending (1), or decumbent (5), or prostrate (4), or rambling (4); 5-43.27-120 cm long; rooting from lower nodes (10/10). Lateral branches ample (1/1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (11), or a ciliolate membrane (1). Leaf-blades linear (2), or lanceolate, or elliptic (4), or ovate (3); membranous (1), or herbaceous (11); firm (11), or flaccid (1). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (9), or with obscure cross veins (1), or with distinct cross veins (2). INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle; exserted (11), or embraced at base by subtending leaf (1). Panicle open (10), or contracted (2). Primary panicle branches not whorled (11), or whorled at lower nodes (1). Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform (7/9), or linear (2/9). FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets obovate; laterally compressed; gibbous; 1.2-1.671-2.5 mm long; falling entire. GLUMES Glumes shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (1), or ovate; membranous; without keels; 0 -veined (1), or 3 -veined (11), or 4-5 -veined (2). Lower glume lateral veins absent (1), or distinct (11). Lower glume surface glabrous (10), or puberulous (1), or pubescent (1), or hispid (1). Lower glume apex obtuse (1), or acute (11), or acuminate (1). Upper glume elliptic (1), or oblong (11); gibbous; membranous; without keels; 3 -veined (8), or 4 -veined (1), or 5 -veined (4), or 6 -veined (1), or 7 -veined (2). Upper glume surface glabrous (8), or puberulous (2), or pubescent (2), or hispidulous (2), or hispid (1); with simple hairs (4/5), or tubercle-based hairs (1/5). Upper glume apex obtuse (3), or acute (8), or cuspidate (1). FLORETS Basal sterile florets male (4), or barren (9); with palea (5), or without significant palea (8). Lemma of lower sterile floret oblong; membranous; 3 -veined (2), or 4 -veined (1), or 5 -veined (10), or 7 -veined (1); obtuse (8), or acute (4), or cuspidate (1). Fertile lemma ovate (1), or orbicular (1), or obovate (10); laterally compressed; gibbous; hemispherical (1/1); coriaceous (3), or indurate (9); without keel; 5 -veined (9/9), or 6-7 -veined (2/9). Lemma lateral veins obscure (9/9). Lemma surface smooth (11), or punctate (1). Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex obtuse (4/6), or acute (2/6); without ornament (3), or with a little green crest (9), or with a green spot (1). Palea embraced by lemma (3), or reflexed at apex (9); involute; coriaceous (3), or indurate (9); 2 -veined (9/9). Palea keels wingless (11), or winged (1). FLOWER Anthers 3 (7/7). FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (7/7); ovoid (1/1); laterally compressed (1/1); plano-convex (1/1).
