General Description

HABIT Annual, or perennial (1). Culms erect (1), or geniculately ascending (1), or decumbent; 5-17.5-30 cm long; without nodal roots (1/1), or rooting from lower nodes (1/1). Ligule an eciliate membrane. INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle. Panicle open. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform; tip pyriform. FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic; laterally compressed; 1.3-1.6-2 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. GLUMES Glumes persistent; exceeding apex of florets; similar to fertile lemma in texture (1), or firmer than fertile lemma (1). Lower glume ovate; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined (1), or 3 -veined (1). Lower glume lateral veins absent (1), or distinct (1). Lower glume apex obtuse. Upper glume ovate; 1.6-1.8-2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume apex obtuse. FLORETS Fertile lemma elliptic; hyaline (1), or membranous (1); without keel; 3 -veined. Lemma apex dentate; 3 -fid; truncate (1/1). Palea 1 length of lemma. FLOWER Anthers 3. FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; obovoid; dorsally compressed; plano-convex. DISTRIBUTION Europe, or Africa, or Temperate Asia (1).
