General Description

HABIT Perennial. Stolons present. Culms decumbent; 18-24 cm long. Lateral branches sparse. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blade midrib conspicuous. INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle. Panicle contracted. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic; laterally compressed; 3-3.5 mm long; falling entire. GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; chartaceous; 5-7 -veined. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume elliptic; 2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; chartaceous; without keels; 9 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins ribbed. Upper glume surface glabrous, or pilose; with tubercle-based hairs. Upper glume apex acute. FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret elliptic; chartaceous; 9 -veined; ribbed; acute. Fertile lemma oblong; dorsally compressed; cartilaginous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma lateral veins obscure. Lemma surface striate. Lemma apex acute. Palea gaping; cartilaginous. FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 3. FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp. DISTRIBUTION Australasia.
