General Description

Root-climbing, herbaceous liana with roots 0.3 - 0.5 cm diam. Internodes up to 7 cm long, 2.6 - 2.7 cm diam., strongly angled, grey-green, semi-glossy, relatively shorter in flowering portion of stem. LEAVES: prophyll 8 - 14 cm long, 2-keeled, dark green, with paler striae, strongly twisted or even spiralled, caducous; petiole 30 - 63.5 x 0.8 - 2.0 cm diam., dark green with fine dark purplish striae, semi-spongy, adaxial surface slightly sulcate with rounded margins, abaxial surface rounded, extrafloral nectaries purplish near the apex; leaf blade deeply pinnatifid, adaxial surface glossy dark green with sulcate midrib, abaxial surface pale green with midrib and primary lateral veins prominent and paler than the lamina; anterior division 39 - 62.5 x 50 - 61.5 cm, primary lateral lobes 9 - 10 on each side, each 2 - 4 cm wide halfway along its length, with a single primary lateral vein, apex somewhat acuminate, separated by sinuses (1.5) 2 - 3 (5.0) cm wide at base; posterior divisions weakly developed, represented by the basal pinna on either side, each 4 - 5.5 x 22 - 29 cm, apex somewhat curved towards leaf apex and with 2 basiscopic lobes, the proximal one less well developed. INFLORESCENCE: 2 - 5 (-6) in each floral sympodium; peduncle 9 - 21 x 0.3 - 0.4 cm, subcylindric; spathe 10.5 cm long, constricted; tube 3 - 5.5 cm long x 2.0 - 2.5 cm diam., externally pale green with darker striae when immature, when mature green with reddish spots, internally purplish red; blade 2.5 - 5 x 1.5 - 1.8 cm, pale green on both sides, excretory resin canals lacking; spadix 8.8 cm long, subsessile, slightly decurrent; female zone 4 x 1.5 cm, cream coloured; intermediate sterile male zone 0.8 - 1.2 cm; fertile male zone 4 - 0.8 cm. Flowers: stamens 3 - 4 per flower, 1.25 - 1.5 x c. 0.65 mm, thickening towards the apex; gynoecium 2.25 - 2.5 mm long with raphides present throughout its length; ovary 1.25 - 1.75 x c. 0.75 mm; locules 6 - 7 per ovary, filled with translucent mucilaginous contents; ovules 3 per locule, c. 0.2 mm long, hemianatropous, with few trichomes at the funicle base; placentation axile, ovules inserted a little below the centre of the ovary; style c. 0.5 - 0.75 x 1.0 mm; stigma 0.5 - 0.6 mm broad, discoid. INFRUCTESCENCE not seen.

Habitat

Root-climber always above 2m on tree boles; in the Ducke Forest Reserve in humid forest ("mata de baixio", "floresta de platô").
