General Description

Large herb. Stem hanging, 1 m or more long, 8 cm in diameter, internodes very short, covered with a thick layer of cataphyll remains. Cataphylls broad, 32 cm long, up to 2.5 cm thick in the lower part. LEAVES: Petiole very robust, heavy and slightly spongy, subterete, nevertheless decidedly flat adaxially, 69-95 cm long, 2.7 cm wide (2.3 cm thick) marked with violet above halfway, sheathing part 5 cm long. Leaf blade upright on the petiole, coriaceous, althoughlateral veins easily broken when dry, outline broadly ovate up to 75 cm long, 63 cm wide; subsagittate-cordate at the base, broadly obtuse at the apex (170-180º) and abruptly acuminate, strongly undulate; posterior lobes subangular, apex itself very obtuse, separated by an open 10-15 cm deep sinus; adaxially barely glossy, slightly glaucescent; midrib 1.3 cm wide at the base, primary lateral veins ca. 7-8 , broadly sulcate departing from the midrib at an angle of 45º-55º, midrib and veins purplish-red punctate; 4-5 primary basal veins joined into short posterior ribs, naked for 4-6.5 cm in the sinus; abaxially blade very pale green, midrib strongly angular-convex, purplish spotted, primary lateral [veins] very robust, convex greento cream colored.
