General Description

Herb scandent. Stem pink-olive green, silvery below, soon pale brown, up to 4 cm thick, strongly 2-angular, internodes 8-10 cm long. Cataphyll ca. 40 cm long, thick, olive green-pink, abaxially 2-keeled-winged, wings 0.3 cm wide, caducous. LEAVES: Petiole sub-terete below, dorsoventrally rather compressed, upper part almost semi-terete, ventrally moderately convex-angular, equal or longer than the blade, 1.8 cm thick, green, red-violet upwards, sheathed and red-purplish in the lower part for 6 cm, wing wider, 1.6 cm wide. Leaf blade reflexed, parchment-like or sub-coriaceous, slightly unequal-sided, ovate in outline, cordate at the base, acuminate at the apex, 72-75 cm long and 47 cm wide, margin undulate and pink-violet-margined; adaxially rather glossy, bright ('laete') green; midrib flattened or moderately convex, 1.2 cm wide, yellowish-green at the base, marked with violet spots; primary lateral veins 5-6 on each side, sulcate, at an angle of under 60º, ascending arcuately towards the margin; abaxially glossy, pale green, venation suffused with pink, eventually yellowish green; posterior lobes separated by an oblong-parabolic sinus, posterior ribs wide and robust, angular abaxially and basally dark purple, naked for 1.5-2 cm in the sinus. INFLORESCENCES: Peduncles in threes, subtended by rather green cataphylls suffused with pink (interrupted striolate). Pistillate flowers: ovaries 8(-9)-locular, 1-2 ovules in each locule, affixed near the base of the locule.
