General Description

Stem scandent, thick, up to 2 m long, internodes short. Cataphylls hidden by squamuliform [small scale-shaped] emergences. LEAVES: Petioles terete, 40-45 cm long, glabrous or with transverse squamules at the base, covered with very numerous, long verrucose, spreading or reflexed dense emergences towards the top. Blade thinly coriaceous, yellowish green or reddish margined, cordate-ovate, 30-35 cm long, 20-28 cm wide, posterior lobes separated by broad deep or oblong-obtuse sinus, lower leaves more divergent, semi-triangular; upper leaves, semi-ovate, retrorse. Anterior lobe sub-triangular, apex long-acuminate, 3-4 times longer than the posterior lobes. 4-6 primary lateral veins on each side in the posterior lobes, joined together at the base into short posterior ribs, more or less denuded in the sinus, 4 [veins] from each side of the midrib, ascending arcuately in the anterior lobe. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle short. Spathe red-brownish, smooth. Spadix not yet entirely developed; female zone cylindric, ca. 4 cm long, 8 mm thick; male zone conoid, rather obtuse, 6 cm long, 1 cm thick at the base, attenuating upwards. Pistils shortly ovoid, 1.6 mm long, stigma broadly 4-lobulate. Male flowers 3-4-androus.
