General Description

Epiphytic herb. Stem: apex green becoming straw-coloured in the mature parts, internodes 2-4 cm long. Prophyll 10.5 x 0.8 cm long, linear-lanceolate, colour unknown. LEAVES: Petiole 11-14.5 cm long. Leaf blade 28-30 x 10-11 cm, oblong, subcoriaceous, acuminate apex, base emarginate, primary lateral veins 3-5 per side, not very pronounced; posterior divisions absent. INFLORESCENCE: 1-3 per floral sympodium, peduncle 2.5-7 cm long. Spathe 10-13.5 x 3-3.3 cm, oblong, moderately constricted. Spadix 7-12.5 cm long; male zone 3-7 cm long; male sterile zone 0.7-1.5 cm long; female zone 2.5-4 cm long, green (colour according to the label). Flowers: stamens 0.7-1.5 x 0.4-1 mm; intermediate staminodes 1-2.5 x 0.7-1.5 mm; gynoecium 1-1.5 x 0.5-0.8 mm, ovoid, ovary with 6 locules, locules uniovulate, placentation basal. INFRUCTESCENCE: Berries not seen.


Epiphytic in tropical rain forest.


Western Brazil and Peru.


Data deficient (DD). Philodendron pulchellum is apparently an uncommon plant, known from only two collections so far. Further collections are needed to allow complete evaluation of this species.
