Erect or reclining herb. Stem green up to 1.3 m long, 2.3-3.5 cm in diameter, internodes 2-6 cm long. Cataphyll green, 2-keeled dorsally, 22-31 cm long, soon marcescent and drying, persistent. LEAVES: Petiole hard and rigid, subterete, ventrally canaliculate, margins angular, 0.8 times shorter to 1.2 times longer than the blade, 37-56 cm long and 0.9-1.4 cm thick, the upper 4-6 cm often purple. Leaf blade sub-coriaceous (papery when dry), sub-flat, oblong-ovate or narrowly elliptic-ovate, almost or fully truncate at the base, or not deeply sub-cordate, acute or obtuse at the apex with a short acumen, up to 54 cm long and 24 cm wide, green (inner 1 mm) and pink-margined (outer 1 mm); adaxially glossy, smooth, green; midrib yellowish-green, moderately concave and 1.3 cm wide towards the base, flat further up and moderately convex towards the apex, primary lateral vein sulcate, 6-8 on each side with one secondary vein which is baryly distinguishable between each pair, spreading at an angle of 65-80º, minor veins very slender, sub-equal and parallel; abaxially paler green, midrib yellowish, in the form of U and primary lateral veins raised, yellowish green. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle solitary, 20 cm long. Spathe ca. 15 cm long, tube 7.5 cm long and 1.6 cm thick (when dry), externally whitish, internally dark red, blade white externally and internally. Female flowers: ovary 2-locular, numerous ovules in each locule, superposed.
