General Description

Rosulate herb. Stem ca. 2 cm in diameter, internodes abbreviated, cataphyll remains brown, persistent at least at the apex. Cataphyll apparently thick, up to 18 cm long. LEAVES: Petiole thick, ventrally canaliculate, 43-60 cm long; geniculum ca. 4 cm long. Leaf blade subcoriaceous, more or less narrowly oblong-ovate in outline, the lower 2/3 almost oblong, attenuate towards the apex in the upper third, apex acuminate, truncate at the base, 48-66 cm long and 23-31 cm wide, deep green adaxially, midrib canaliculate; ca. 10 primary lateral veins on each side, rising upwards at an angle of 50º-60º, with a secondary vein parallel between each pair, also several tertiary and quaternary veins, which are prominulent and more or less straight, but not always parallel between the primary veins; abaxially pale green, venation dirty green. INFLORESCENCE: Peduncle solitary, 14 cm long and 2 cm thick, pale green, marked with whitish green striations near apex. Spathe ca. 12 cm long, very pale green externally, internally whitish green or greenish, tube inflated-elliptic, ca. 6 cm long. Spadix equal to spathe, thick, stipitate, stipe 0.2 cm long at the back, 0.5 cm at the front. Pistillate flowers oblong when seen from the side, ovary (7-)8-locular, ovules very numerous in each locule, positioned vertically from the base to the apex.
