General Description

Scandent herb up to 8 m. Stem 2.4-2.6 cm diam., naked. Cataphyll 32 cm long, caduceus. LEAVES: Petiole terete (34-)40-54 cm long, 1 cm thick halfway, green, near apex abaxially dark purple, sheathed for 3.5-6 cm. Leaf blade parchment-like, to semi-coriaceous but brittle, ovate in outline, 33-47 cm long, 22-32 cm wide, cordate towards the base, posterior lobes semicircular (usually with one lobe 1-2 cm longer than the other), separated by a narrow, parabolic (rarely spathulate) sinus which is 6.5-10 cm deep. More or less obtuse towards the apex, the apex itself acuminate (1-2 cm); adaxially the midrib is 0.7-0.9 cm wide at the base, lateral veins more strongly sulcate; costal primary lateral veins 4-5 on each side, emerging at an angle of 55-65º, 3-4 principal veins in each posterior lobe. INFLORESCENCES in groups of four. Peduncle 5 cm long. Spathe 9 cm long, tube 4.3x1.8 cm, externally reddish brown, margin cream-coloured, 0.3 cm wide, from the blade green-cream coloured; internally tube wine-coloured, blade cream-coloured. Spadix 1.8 cm shorter than the spathe, 6.7 cm long, stipe 0.2 cm long at the back, 0.5-0.7 cm long at the front, female zone 3.9 cm long, male zone 2.8 cm long. Pistillate flowers: ovary (4-)5-6-locular, locules 1-2-ovulate, ovules affixed near the base. Staminate flowers 5-3-androus. INFRUCTESCENCE: Peduncle 6 cm long, spateh 9.7 cm long, tube 5.5x2 cm, female zone of spadix 7.7x2.2 cm. Berries green-cream-coloured, truncate-concave at apex, 0.6x0.4 cm.
