F. macedonica BoRNM. from SW Jugoslavia and EC Albania (not seen, type material probably destroyed in B) is apparently similar to F. epirotica, differing in the shorter nectaries (c. 3 mm).

The true F. sibthorpiana (cf. Fl. Gr. 4: Tab. 330, 1823) is a rare endemic of SW Anatolia. Other yellow-flowered species occur at low altitudes on the East Aegean islands and in SW Peloponnisos; a yellow-flowered race of F. ehrhartii Bmss. & ORPH. in Bmss. occurs on the island of Tinos.

F. montana resembles F. orientalis ADAMS, F. meleagris L., F. epirotica, and a dark purplish variety of F. messanensis RAFIN. from the Ionian coast and islands. F. orientalis, described from the Caucasus, was until recently believed to be conspecific with F. montana (cf. Fl. Eur. 5: 33, 1980), but in fact differs in the always alternate leaves, larger and narrowly campanulate flowers with larger and fewer tessellations, and ovate-lanceolate nectaries; it probably has 2n = 24 (cf. FEDOROV 1969: 392) as have also F. meleagris, F. epirotica and F. messanensis. Another species with 2n = 18, F. ruthenica WIKSTROM, also described from the Caucasus, differs from F. montana mainly in its winged capsule.
